Robot Mower Losing Signal? The Shed WiFi Extender Fix

Some properties are hard on satellite signal. Some are hard on cellular. Every so often we walk one that’s hard on both — and that was this install: a Segway Navimow X430 under mature tree canopy, in a spot where one bar of 4G counts as a good day.

The mower kept dropping its connection, pausing mid-job, and pinging the owner with “lost connection” alerts. The fix didn’t come from the mower aisle at all. It came from the networking aisle: an outdoor WiFi extender, mounted on the backyard shed. The whole thing is in the video above — five minutes, start to finish.

Why does a robot mower keep losing its connection?

Because two separate radio links have to stay healthy, and either one can drop. When an owner tells us “my mower keeps losing signal,” the first job is figuring out which signal:

Lose either one and the mower does the safe thing: pauses, throws an error, or drives home to the dock. Lose both intermittently and you get what this customer had — a machine that spends more time reconnecting than mowing.

On this property, the canopy left the RTK base station with a marginal view of the sky (here’s what tree cover does to RTK, measured on a real yard), and the cellular signal was too weak to be a dependable backup. Two symptoms, one root cause: no reliable path for correction data.

How does a WiFi extender fix weak RTK and weak cellular?

By giving the mower one strong connection that replaces both shaky ones. NetRTK delivers the same centimeter corrections a base station would — over the internet instead of over the air from a local antenna. The mower just needs a solid data link to receive them, and it doesn’t care whether that link is cellular or WiFi.

This property had exactly one thing going for it: a shed close to the lawn, with power inside and a faint one-to-two-bar whisper of the home WiFi reaching its wall.

That whisper was enough. We mounted a WAVLINK AX1800 outdoor extender on the shed’s exterior and ran it in repeater mode: it latches onto the weak signal coming from the house and rebroadcasts a strong 2.4 GHz network across the entire mowing area — lawn, driveway, out to the far edge. The mower joins the shed network, pulls its NetRTK corrections over the internet, and stops caring what the cell tower or the base station’s sky view are doing.

The dropouts ended that day. The map finished, the schedule started, and the “lost connection” notifications went quiet.

What gear does this take?

One piece of hardware. The WAVLINK AX1800 outdoor WiFi extender runs about $160 and is built to stay outside permanently:

On range: plan on roughly 250–300 feet of dependable 2.4 GHz coverage in open air. The spec sheet’s line-of-sight claim runs close to a thousand feet, and in an empty parking lot it might deliver — but trees, fences and grade changes all take their cut. Design around the conservative number and let anything past it be a bonus.

What settings actually matter?

Four decisions make or break this install:

  1. Let the extender keep its own network name. In repeater mode the WAVLINK broadcasts the home network’s name with an _EXT suffix (think HomeWiFi_EXT2.4), same password. Leave that alone. Rename it to exactly match the house network and the mower sees one big network — and will happily hang onto the weak house signal it can barely hear instead of roaming to the strong shed signal twenty feet away. A distinct name means you join the mower to the shed network once and it stays put.

  2. Everything happens on 2.4 GHz. Navimow’s WiFi radio only speaks 2.4 GHz — and that’s the good news, because 2.4 GHz is also the band that carries farthest and pushes through shed walls and foliage best. The band you’re stuck with is the band you’d want.

  3. Tell the mower WiFi is the network now. In the Navimow app under Settings → Network, we switched the mower from Auto select to Only Wi-Fi. With one-bar 4G in play, we didn’t want it wandering back to a cellular link we already knew was junk.

  4. Plan to finish the setup on-site. The repeater wizard has to scan for and join the customer’s home network, and that can’t happen back at the shop. What can: the firmware update and the admin password. Do those ahead of time, and have the homeowner’s WiFi password in hand before the truck rolls.

When is a shed WiFi extender the right call?

It’s the right tool when a property checks these boxes:

Miss the last two and this particular fix is off the table. Then you’re into different territory: trenching conduit for power or ethernet, a point-to-point wireless bridge between buildings, or repositioning the RTK base station for a better sky view. That’s a site-evaluation conversation — and it’s one we’d rather have before the mower is bought than after.

The half of the job that isn’t in the box

A robotic mower that works is really two purchases: the machine, and a property that can feed it position and data all day. The big-box path handles the first and shrugs at the second. Working out where a property’s signals actually come from — and which piece of gear patches which gap — is where a professional installation earns its keep. Sometimes the answer is a taller mast or smarter antenna placement. Sometimes it’s VisionFence in the shaded corners. And sometimes it’s $160 of networking gear on a shed wall.

Why does my robot mower keep losing signal?

Two separate links can fail: positioning (the RTK corrections the mower needs for centimeter accuracy) and data (the cellular or WiFi connection that carries NetRTK corrections, app control and updates). Tree cover degrades the satellite side; weak cell coverage starves the data side. The right fix depends on which link is dropping — on tough properties it's both, and a strong WiFi network over the lawn can solve the two at once.

Can a Navimow use WiFi instead of cellular?

Yes. WiFi carries everything the built-in 4G does — NetRTK corrections, app control, mapping, firmware and status updates. Navimow's radio is 2.4 GHz only, so the network covering the lawn needs to be a 2.4 GHz network, and in the app under Settings → Network you can set the mower to Only Wi-Fi so it never falls back to a weak cellular link.

What WiFi extender works outdoors for a robot mower?

Should the extender use the same network name as my router?

No — keep them distinct. The WAVLINK's default is your network name with an _EXT suffix and the same password; leave it that way. If the extender clones the exact home network name, the mower may cling to the faint house signal instead of roaming to the strong one nearby. With a separate name, you connect the mower to the shed network once and it stays there.

What if no WiFi or power reaches my lawn at all?

Then a repeater isn't the tool. The options become running conduit for power or ethernet, a point-to-point wireless bridge between the house and an outbuilding, or relocating the RTK base station to a better sky view. Which one makes sense is a site-evaluation question — the property's layout, distances and obstructions decide it.
