“A robot mower can’t work here — too many trees.” We hear it constantly, and for most robot mowers it’s true. But we installed a Mammotion LUBA 3 on a wooded lawn that had defeated every other machine — and it works. Here’s the real, technical reason why, and which LUBA 3 fits your shaded property.

Why trees break most robot mowers

Almost every wire-free robot mower navigates with GPS/RTK, and RTK has one hard requirement: the mower has to see the sky. A tree canopy blocks and scatters the satellite signals, so the mower’s centimeter-accurate fix drifts, wanders, or drops out entirely. This isn’t a brand problem — it’s physics. It’s why a shaded, wooded yard stops a satellite-only robot cold, no matter how good the mower is.

We proved it the hard way: our older LUBA 2 couldn’t hold a signal under this canopy even with a perfectly placed RTK base station. RTK simply can’t fix what the trees take away.

The fix: Tri-Fusion navigation

The LUBA 3 doesn’t rely on satellites alone. It fuses three navigation systems — Mammotion calls it Tri-Fusion — and switches between them intelligently so no single failure stops the mow.

360° LiDAR — the real hero in the woods

LiDAR is what makes the difference. Instead of looking up at satellites, it maps the physical world around the mower in 3D — trees, ground, structures — and navigates off that map. It doesn’t care about the canopy, because it never needed the sky in the first place. Where GPS gives up, LiDAR keeps going.

NetRTK over cellular (iNavi) — precision without a base station

When it can use satellites, the LUBA 3 gets centimeter precision through NetRTK over cellular — Mammotion’s iNavi service. Corrections come over the 4G/5G network from a network of fixed reference stations, so there’s no physical antenna base to install on your property. Fewer parts, faster setup.

AI vision — the backup layer

On top of that, an AI vision system recognizes hundreds of obstacles and adds another positioning layer. The three systems hand off to each other automatically, so a momentary satellite dropout under a tree is a non-event — LiDAR and vision carry it through.

Do robot mowers work under trees?

Most don't. GPS/RTK robot mowers need a clear view of the sky, and a tree canopy blocks the satellites — so they drift or stop. The exception is a mower with LiDAR: the Mammotion LUBA 3 navigates off a 3D map of the physical world (trees, ground, structures), so it keeps working under cover where satellite-only mowers fail.

Why can't an RTK robot mower handle a shaded yard?

RTK gets centimeter accuracy by comparing satellite signals against a reference — but the mower still has to SEE the satellites. Under a dense canopy those signals are blocked or bounced, so the fix drifts. In our testing, even a perfectly placed RTK base couldn't save the older LUBA 2 under heavy trees.

How does the LUBA 3 mow under a canopy when others can't?
