Mammotion — LiDAR, all-wheel drive, and the wooded yards other robots can't map
The LUBA 3 AWD fuses 360° LiDAR, NetRTK and AI vision, so it holds its position under tree cover and after dark, and its four-wheel drive is rated for 80% slopes. Three sizes to 1.25 acres, plus the small-yard YUKA mini. We run five of them on our own 12-acre system.
Who Mammotion is for
- Wooded and tree-covered yards. LiDAR maps the yard in 3D and doesn't need a clear view of the sky — our best-of pick for canopy, and the reason a satellite-only mower's drift isn't your problem.
- Steep ground. All-wheel drive rated to an 80% grade (about 39°), the strongest residential slope rating we carry, and our best-of pick for hills.
- Night mowing. LiDAR needs no light, so the LUBA 3 runs the same at 2 a.m. as at noon — the model we point to when the question is 'can it mow in the dark'.
- Complex yards with a lot going on — furniture, play sets, beds — where 3D obstacle sensing beats a bump sensor.
- Owners who like the tech: live video, cloud mapping and DropMow arrived by firmware update on units already in the field.
- Quarter-acre lots. The YUKA mini 2 navigates by camera alone — no antenna, no base station — for small yards.
Who it isn't for
- Rough, rutted ground. On a Pennsylvania mountain property the LUBA kept getting stuck, so we swapped in a tracked Terranox — the story is on this site because it should be.
- More than about 1.25 acres on one unit. Past that it's a fleet (five LUBA 3s cover part of our own 12-acre system) or a different brand.
- Real-world coverage the brochure promises. The 5000 cuts about 0.30 acres per charge under load, not the rate-times-runtime maximum — our numbers use the honest figure.
- Anyone who wants a published battery cycle life. Mammotion doesn't publish one; Navimow does.

Mammotion — common questions
Which LUBA 3 size do I need?
The LUBA 3 AWD 1000 covers about 0.37 acres, the 3000 about 0.75, and the 5000 about 1.25. All three share the LiDAR-plus-RTK-plus-vision navigation and the 80%-slope all-wheel drive; they differ in battery and runtime. For a quarter-acre lot with no antenna at all, the YUKA mini 2. Map your lawn free and the tool sizes it to the real mowable area.
Does the LUBA 3 need an RTK base station?
No antenna to place — it runs NetRTK corrections over cellular and fuses them with 360° LiDAR and AI vision, so it holds position where a satellite-only mower drifts: under tree canopy and in the dark. That's why it's our pick for wooded yards. Cellular coverage at the property still matters, and our map estimates it before you buy.
Can the LUBA 3 mow at night?
Yes. Camera-based mowers slow down or stall in the dark; LiDAR doesn't need light, so the LUBA 3 runs the same overnight. Dew and wildlife habits still apply — the night-mowing guide covers both.
How steep can a Mammotion go?
The LUBA 3 AWD is rated to an 80% grade, about 39° — the strongest residential slope rating we carry, and our field test climbed an 84% test grade. Traction is the point: four driven wheels hold on wet grass and side-hills where two-wheel-drive mowers spin.
What's the honest catch?
Three things. Real cut per charge on the 5000 is about 0.30 acres under load, not the brochure's rate-times-runtime maximum. Rough, rutted ground can beat it — on a mountain property ours kept getting stuck and a tracked Terranox took over. And Mammotion publishes no battery cycle life, so we plan conservatively. Buying from a dealer who'll answer the phone covers the rest.
