How to Pick the Perfect Spot for Your Robot Mower Charging Station

Before and after: a robot mower charging station in overgrown grass with its cables exposed, and a Navimow charging station set on a square of artificial turf against a house wall, under the headline Protect your robot mower charger

Where you put your charging station matters more than most people think. A good spot keeps your mower docking reliably, protects your cables, and keeps your yard looking clean. A bad one leads to missed docks, damaged chargers, and a patch of grass you’re always trimming around.

We made the video above because we keep replacing customers’ chargers, and the cause is nearly always the same. After installing robotic mowers across PA, NJ, MD, DE, VA, and CO, here’s what we look for when choosing a charging station location.

1. Start on flat, level ground

The charging station needs a flat, stable surface. If the station sits on a slope or bumpy ground, the mower can miss the charging contacts and fail to dock. Before you set it down, check the area with a level and fix any dips or high spots.

2. Leave a clear, straight approach

Your mower needs room to line up as it comes home. Avoid tucking the station into a tight corner or right behind an obstacle. A clear, straight lane in front of the dock gives the mower the best chance of docking on the first try, every time.

3. Keep it close to power, not across the lawn

Pick a spot near an outdoor outlet so the power cable has a short, simple path. Long cable runs across the yard are harder to protect and easier to damage. Wherever the cable runs, bury it so it’s out of the way of foot traffic, pets, and lawn tools. Buried cable is part of a proper install for exactly this reason.

4. Think about signal and coverage

Many of today’s robotic mowers use GPS, RTK, or vision-based navigation, so the area around the station matters. Avoid spots buried under heavy tree cover or squeezed tight against tall walls when possible, since they can make it harder for the mower to get a clean start. If your model uses a separate antenna, follow the manufacturer’s placement guidance. We cover that decision in where to install your RTK antenna.

5. Plan for the grass around the station

This is the one most people miss. A robot mower can’t cut tight around its own charging station, so a strip of tall grass grows there. Trimming it with a weed whacker is the number one way we see customers cut their charger cables.

The weed whacker problem: the charger's cable runs straight through the strip of grass the mower can't reach, right where the string trimmer goes.

There are two easy ways to solve it.

Turf pad: Set the station on a roughly 3’ × 3’ piece of artificial turf with the cables buried underneath. The grass below dies off, and the area stays green and trim-free.

The turf pad in use: the station sits level on the turf with the cables buried underneath, and there's no grass left around the dock to trim.

Mulch bed: If you have a mulch bed next to the lawn, carve out a level pocket for the station. The mulch keeps grass from growing back. It takes a little more work, but it blends right into your landscaping.

The mulch bed option: leveling a pocket for the station at the edge of the lawn, so the mower drives straight in and nothing grows back around it.

Either way, you never have to trim around your charger again.

6. Make it easy for you, too

You’ll occasionally need to clean the charging contacts, check the mower, or bring it in for winter. Choose a spot you can reach easily, ideally somewhere you walk past often so you’ll notice if anything looks off.

Frequently asked

Why do robot mower charging station cables keep getting cut?

Almost always a weed whacker. A robot mower can't cut tight around its own charging station, so a strip of tall grass grows there, and trimming it by hand puts the string right beside the power and antenna cables. One pass too close and the cable is shredded. It's the number one way we see customers damage their chargers.

Can a robot mower cut the grass around its charging station?

Not tight around it. The mower needs room to line up and dock, so there's always a strip of grass next to the station it never reaches. The fix is to make sure nothing grows there: set the station on a turf pad or in a mulch bed.

What is a turf pad for a robot mower charging station?

A piece of artificial turf, roughly 3 ft × 3 ft, laid where the station goes with the cables buried underneath. The station sits on top, the grass below dies off, and the spot stays green and trim-free for good. It's now a standard option on every Zippy Lawnz installation.

Does the charging station need to be on level ground?

Yes. If the station sits on a slope or bumpy ground, the mower can miss the charging contacts and fail to dock. Check the spot with a level and fix any dips or high spots before you set it down.

Can you move or retrofit a charging station on a mower I already own?

Yes. We relocate charging stations and retrofit them with a turf pad, including on mowers we didn't sell. We're an authorized dealer and service center for Segway Navimow, Mammotion, Yarbo and Lopkin.
