He Found a Better Way to Mow: Downingtown Navimow X430 Review
Two weeks after his install, this Downingtown, PA homeowner has one piece of advice for anyone still thinking about a robot mower: pull the trigger.
Greg never wanted to mow his own lawn. He’s busy, and he was happy to pay someone to do it. The problem was never the money. It was that paying a crew meant the lawn got cut on their schedule, not his. So we walked his property with him on camera and talked about why he switched to a Segway Navimow X430, what his setup looks like, and how life has changed now that the lawn mows itself. The video above is his own words. This post is the details.
The lawn service scheduling problem
The first landscaper charged about $40 a cut and could only come on Tuesdays. Greg wanted the lawn cut before the weekend, not after it. So he chased down a second crew. They charged $50 and started on Fridays, which was the whole point. Then they drifted to Saturdays. And when rain was coming, they cut early, in the rain, because a route doesn’t wait for the weather.
“He’s cutting my yard in the rain. He’s cutting it early. Then he was cutting on a Friday, then he moved to a Saturday.”
That’s the trade every mowing contract makes. You get your weekends back, but the lawn is cut whenever the truck gets there. Robot mower vs. lawn service has the full cost and lawn-health comparison, and our Villanova install shows what a heavy crew mowing wet turf does to a lawn.
What changed: the lawn mows itself, on his schedule
“With my buddy MowJo here, I don’t have to worry about it. I put it on his schedule and he just goes and cuts, and it’s been amazing.”
The mower runs on the days and hours Greg picked. It’s quiet enough that it doesn’t disturb anyone, and he can go do his own thing knowing the yard is getting cut. His son noticed before Greg said a word:
“My son was here the other night. He goes, ‘Wow, your yard looks great.’ I said, ‘Well, I want to introduce you to someone.’ He’s like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is amazing.’”
His setup
Greg went further than most owners do in the first two weeks. Three things stood out.
A turf pad under the charging station
Greg’s a golfer, so the dock got the putting-green treatment: a piece of artificial turf laid under the charging station, with a Navimow garage over it.
- A level, clean surface for the dock
- No mud where the mower pulls in and out
- Weeds can’t grow up around the station
- A roll of turf from any home center, cheap and quick to lay
We set our installs on a rubber stall mat for the same reasons, and why we use a charging station mat covers how to map around it. Turf does the same job if you prefer the look. The garage keeps sun, rain and leaves off the mower between runs.
An outdoor enclosure box for the power supply
The power supply sits in a watertight outdoor enclosure box beside the house. The cables pass through rubber grommets, the lid closes, and the supply stays dry and clean all season. It isn’t attached to anything, so at the end of the season it unplugs and comes inside in one piece.
This is a tip we’ve been using on our own installs this year, and Greg picked it up from us. It’s tip number one in 5 pro Navimow install tips.
Meet MowJo
Every robot mower we install gets a name eventually, and Greg’s is MowJo. He asked Copilot for a logo, had it printed as waterproof, UV-resistant stickers at Sticker Mule, and we UV-printed the MowJo logo straight onto a swap-on camera housing, the custom nameplate we offer with every X4 series and Terranox install. The housing pulls off the mower and clips back on by hand, so the plate can change if the name ever does. (The names other owners have landed on are in what people name their robot mowers.)
The mowing schedule he planned with Copilot
Greg’s property has two sections, front and back. He took a screenshot of the zone map in the Navimow app, dropped it into Microsoft Copilot along with the mowing and charge times, and asked it to lay out a week. What came back:
- The front yard one day, the back yard the next, alternating through the week
- A midday window each day, so the lawn is done before evening
- Sunday off: a rest day for MowJo, and a catch-up day if rain keeps the mower in during the week
Alternating zones keeps each run short, so the mower finishes a zone on one charge instead of stopping to top up partway through the lawn. It’s efficient for the mower and easy to read for the owner. How the app’s schedule, zones and mowing cycles fit together is in Navimow scheduling explained, and a built-in day off is a smart default: can robot mowers mow in the rain covers when to let it run and when to pause.
Two sections, two visits
We mapped one section on the install day. The second visit added the other section and adjusted a few boundaries now that Greg had watched the mower run for a couple of weeks. That’s normal. A map is a first draft until you’ve seen the mower work the edges, and a second pass to tighten it is part of our install, not an extra. Our map testing walk-through is the checklist we use.
Greg’s take on the process:
“Paul came here, he mapped the yard. He’s here for a second time; we had to adjust some boundaries. He knows these things inside and out, super helpful, very responsive.”
Early days: a rake on the mower
While we were there we brought over an X430 we’ve been modifying, with a rake fitted ahead of the deck. Heading into fall, it picks up leaves and twigs as it mows. It’s an experiment, not a product. We’re still testing it, and we’ll share what we learn. The upgrades that have already earned their place are in Navimow upgrades that actually work.
His verdict
“The app is super easy to use, super user-friendly, and the adaptability to different things is amazing. It’s an amazing piece of equipment.”
Greg priced riding mowers at Home Depot and Lowe’s before he bought, and the X430 came in cheaper. Against the crew, the math is simpler still: a 34-week Pennsylvania season at $50 a cut is $1,700 a year, and the X430 lists at $2,499. It pays for itself midway through the second season, and from then on the lawn is cut every day on his schedule instead of once a week on theirs.
“I’m wondering why more people are not getting these things. For me and for my yard, this is the perfect marriage.”
One more thing he said that stuck with us: his son runs a small business, and buying from a local dealer who installs, maps and comes back to adjust the boundaries mattered to him. We’ll take that.

Frequently asked
Is a robot mower cheaper than a weekly lawn service?
Usually within two seasons. This Downingtown homeowner was paying $50 a cut; over a 34-week Pennsylvania season that is about $1,700 a year, every year. A Navimow X430 lists at $2,499, about what the riding mowers he priced at the home center cost, and after the purchase the running cost is a few dollars of electricity a month plus a set of blades. By the middle of the second season the mower has paid for itself, and the lawn is cut on your schedule instead of the crew's.
Can I choose which days a robot mower mows?
Yes. The Navimow app has a weekly schedule with a time window for each day, and you can assign specific zones to specific days. This owner mows the front one day and the back the next, Monday through Saturday, and leaves Sunday open as a catch-up day if rain keeps the mower in during the week.
Should I put my robot mower's charging station on artificial turf?
It works well. A turf pad gives the dock a level, clean surface, keeps weeds from growing up around the station, and keeps mud off the mower's wheels on the way in and out. A roll of turf from any home center is enough. We usually set the station on a rubber stall mat for the same reasons. Either way, the mower can't cut right at its own dock, so a pad there looks cleaner than grass that grows long around it.
Does a Navimow power supply need an outdoor enclosure box?
We recommend one on every install. A watertight outdoor enclosure box beside the house keeps rain, sprinklers, mulch and string trimmers off the power supply all season. The cables run through rubber grommets so water can't get in. Because the box isn't attached to anything, winterizing is just unplug, lift the lid and carry the power supply inside.
