My lawn has crabgrass, weeds, and thin spots. All summer, though, my robotic mower made it look great. Daily mowing and straight stripes made a rough lawn look clean and even.

How a robot mower makes a bad lawn look good

A robot mower doesn’t fix a bad lawn. It makes the lawn look much better than it is, for three reasons.

The result is a lawn that looks tidy and uniform with almost no effort.

What the stripes were hiding

Walk the lawn instead of looking at it from the porch and the story changes. Under the stripes, my crabgrass and thin spots were still there. The robot was keeping them short and even, which is the whole trick: a weed cut to the same height as the grass blends in.

So this fall I stopped hiding the problem. I pulled the crabgrass, and I’m renovating the lawn with tall fescue. The video above shows the whole job, and I’m writing each part up on its own, one a week:

The takeaway

A robot mower can make almost any lawn look good with very little effort. With some extra work in the fall, it can also help you build a lawn that’s actually healthy underneath.

I’ll post a spring update showing how the tall fescue filled in.

Frequently asked

Can a robot mower fix a bad lawn?

Not by itself. Daily mowing at one height, straight stripes and micro-clippings make a weedy, thin lawn look tidy and even, and daily cutting stops weeds that flower above the cut from reseeding. But thin spots and crabgrass are still under the stripes. Fixing them takes a fall renovation: scalp, clear the clippings, dethatch, core aerate, overseed and topdress.

Why does a lawn look better with a robot mower?

Three reasons. It mows every day, so the grass never gets shaggy between cuts and weeds rarely stand taller than the turf. It mows in straight lines, and the eye reads even stripes as a healthy lawn. And it returns tiny clippings that feed the soil a little nitrogen every day.
