5 Reasons Nobody Steals a Robot Mower: Navimow X4 Anti-Theft Tested

By Paul Richards, Zippy Lawnz

It’s the first question I hear at almost every door I knock on. Not “how well does it cut?” Not “what does it cost?” It’s this:

“What stops somebody from just picking it up and walking off with it?”

Fair question. A robotic mower is a $1,500–$3,000 piece of equipment sitting in your front yard, unattended, sometimes at 6 a.m. So instead of just telling people it’s fine, I decided to try to steal my own Segway Navimow X4 on camera and see what actually happened.

Short version: it did not go well for the thief. Here’s every layer that stopped me, from weakest to strongest, plus one layer Navimow doesn’t give you that we add on every Zippy Lawnz install.

Reason 1: The PIN lock

This is the simplest layer and it’s on every Navimow we install. During setup we assign a PIN code to the mower. Without that code, the mower will not start, will not drive, and will not do anything useful from the control panel on top.

No PIN, no mowing: the control panel stays locked until the owner's code goes in.

It also stays tied to the owner’s Navimow account. A thief can’t just factory-reset it and set it up fresh as their own. So even if every other layer failed, what they’ve stolen is a forty-pound paperweight they can’t use and can’t easily sell.

Reason 2: The lift alarm

This is the one you hear at the start of the video.

In the Navimow app, under Anti-theft → Alarm, there’s a toggle called Mower lifted alarm. When it’s on, picking the mower up off the ground for a few seconds triggers a loud siren on the mower and sends a push notification to your phone.

Here’s the part that matters: the thief can’t turn it off. Holding the power button doesn’t silence it. The only thing that stops the alarm is entering the PIN on the mower itself. So they’re now carrying a screaming mower down your street with no way to shut it up.

Side benefit: it works just as well on curious kids. If someone’s child tries to pick the mower up, same alarm, same notification. (More on that in are robot mowers safe around kids and pets.)

Reason 3: Geo-fence alarm and live GPS tracking

Let’s say they manage to get it into a truck. This is where it gets serious.

The mower knows its own mapped boundary. In the app you set a Geo-fence alarm distance (ours is set to 33 feet). If the mower ends up outside that radius, you get an alert that it’s left the yard.

The geo-fence alarm: draw a radius around the yard and the app tells you the moment the mower leaves it.

Then you open Locate my mower and watch the dot move.

The Navimow X4 series (X430 and X450) has a 4G cellular connection built in, so it doesn’t need your home Wi-Fi to report its location. It phones home from wherever it is. If you own one of the Navimow i-Series mowers, you’ll need the Navimow Access+ module to get this feature; it’s a small 4G add-on that mounts in the bottom of the mower.

This is the screenshot you hand a police officer. Not “someone took my mower.” Instead: “my mower is at this address right now.”

Reason 4: Apple Find My

If you’re an iPhone user, the Navimow also shows up in Apple Find My, right alongside your AirPods, your keys, and your car.

The mower in Apple Find My, next to everything else you'd hate to lose.

Why does that matter when the mower already has GPS? Because Find My doesn’t depend on the mower’s own connection. It rides on every iPhone that passes near it. If a thief manages to kill the cellular signal by throwing it in a garage or a basement, the moment anyone with an iPhone walks by, it reports in.

Android user? The GPS tracking in the Navimow app still covers you.

Reason 5: The custom owner ID tag (the layer Navimow doesn’t give you)

Everything above comes from Segway. This one comes from us, and day to day I think it’s the one that matters most.

Every mower Zippy Lawnz installs gets a custom owner ID printed directly onto the shell: your name and your phone number. We do it in-house on a UV printer. It’s not a sticker, it’s not a label, and it doesn’t come off.

Name, number and "tracked by GPS," printed right into the shell. Nobody resells that.

Think about what that does to a stolen mower:

That last one happens far more often than actual theft.

A thief should know before they reach for it: this one is tracked.

Does any of this actually matter?

Let me be straight with you. Across all the mowers we’ve put out, theft is rare. Most of these live in a fenced backyard and nobody ever sees them. The bigger real-world use of everything above is finding your mower when it slips out an open gate. (If a gate is the problem, a Navimow MowGate lets the mower through and keeps it closed the rest of the time.)

But when people ask what stops someone from stealing it, the honest answer is: five layers, stacked on top of each other, and a thief has to beat all of them to end up with anything of value. It’s not worth the trouble. They’ll take your grill instead.

What every Zippy Lawnz install includes

We don’t just drop the mower off. Every installation includes:

Frequently asked

Can someone just pick up a robot mower and walk off with it?

They can try. On a Navimow, lifting it off the ground for a few seconds sets off a loud siren and pushes an alert to your phone, and only the PIN entered on the mower itself silences it — holding the power button doesn't. Without the PIN it won't start or drive, and it stays tied to your Navimow account, so it can't be factory-reset and set up as someone else's.

Does the Navimow have GPS tracking?

Yes. The X4 series (X430 and X450) has 4G cellular built in, so it reports its location from anywhere without your home Wi-Fi. Set a geo-fence alarm distance in the app and you're alerted if it leaves the yard, then Locate my mower shows where it is. The i-Series needs the Navimow Access+ 4G module, a small add-on that mounts in the bottom of the mower.

Does a Navimow show up in Apple Find My?

Yes. iPhone users see the Navimow in Find My alongside their AirPods and keys. Find My doesn't depend on the mower's own connection — it reports through any iPhone that passes nearby — so it still checks in if a thief hides it somewhere the cellular signal can't reach. Android users are covered by the GPS tracking in the Navimow app.

How often do robot mowers actually get stolen?

Rarely, in our experience across all the mowers we've installed. Most live in a fenced backyard nobody sees. The more common real-world use of these features is finding a mower that slipped out an open gate and ended up a few houses down.

What anti-theft setup does a Zippy Lawnz install include?

The full setup — PIN, lift alarm, geo-fence, GPS tracking and Find My — a lift-alarm test with you standing there before we leave, and your name and phone number UV-printed directly onto the mower's shell, along with lawn mapping, MowGate installation if needed, and ongoing service and warranty support.
