LUBA 4 AWD vs LUBA 3 AWD: What Actually Changed
We sell and install the LUBA 3 AWD. It is a very good machine, and we have put a lot of them on difficult properties across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
So when Mammotion announced the LUBA 4 AWD at IFA in September 2026, the question that landed in our inbox within about a day was the obvious one: do I wait?
Here is the honest side-by-side, including the parts where the answer is “buy the LUBA 3.”

The five real changes
1. The lineup moved up, it did not just improve
This is the structural change and most coverage has missed it. The LUBA 3 line runs 0.37 to 1.25 acres. The LUBA 4 line runs 0.75 to 3 acres.
There is no LUBA 4 equivalent to the LUBA 3 1500. If you have a third of an acre, the LUBA 4 does not have a model for you — the entry point is now the 0.75-acre 3000F, and you would be paying for coverage you will never use. For small lawns the LUBA 3 1500, or the LUBA mini line, stays the right answer.
At the other end, the LUBA 3 stops at 1.25 acres and the 12000F reaches 3 acres, which is territory Mammotion previously ceded to commercial machines. For a large property on one machine, that is new.
2. The S/H deck fork is gone
Buying a LUBA 3 means choosing a deck you cannot change: S cuts 1″–2.7″, H cuts 2.2″–4″.
We walk customers through this on nearly every LUBA 3 sale, and it is the decision people most often second-guess a year later. Run tall fescue and want it at 3.5″ through July for heat tolerance? You needed H. Bought S because you like a tight cut in spring? You now own the wrong mower for August.
The LUBA 4 3000F and 6000F cover 1″–3.9″ in one machine, which is both decks’ useful range in a single purchase. That removes the single most common source of buyer’s remorse in the LUBA 3 lineup.
Watch the 12000F here: it tops out at 3.3″. Fine for most cool-season lawns at a normal cut, tight if you deliberately run high.
3. Steering that does not scrub
The LUBA 3 turns by driving its wheels at different speeds — skid steering. It works, and on open lawn you will never notice. In tight zones you will: over a season the turn points wear into faint rings, and corners where the mower pivots get scuffed down to soil.
The LUBA 4 gives each front wheel its own steering motor so the wheels roll through the arc, and adds bidirectional driving so it can reverse out of a dead end instead of pivoting in place.
If your lawn is one big open rectangle, this is a nice-to-have. If it is cut up by beds, a fence line, a pool surround or a narrow side yard — the lawns where we spend the most time setting up zones and channels — this is the change you will actually see in the grass.
4. Four cameras instead of two
Both machines fuse LiDAR, NetRTK and camera vision. The LUBA 4 doubles the cameras to four and covers front, sides and rear.
In practice, positioning confidence is rarely the problem in the open. It is the problem in pinch points: the run between the garage and the fence, the shaded lane under spruces, the side yard where the house eats half the sky. Side-looking cameras are aimed at exactly those spots.
Be careful how much weight you give this one, though. The LUBA 3’s Tri-Fusion navigation is already strong, and on the properties where we have installed it, navigation is not what generates support calls. This is a real improvement to something that was already working.
5. The edge trimmer
The genuinely new capability, and the reason most of the press coverage exists. An optional module that cuts the boundary strip the main discs cannot reach.
Three caveats, all of them Mammotion’s own: it is an extra purchase, the price has not been announced, and it does not work on the 12000F. We have not run one on a customer’s lawn yet, so we are not going to tell you how close it really gets to a stone wall. Ask us next season.
Three reasons to buy the LUBA 3 anyway
You need a mower for this coming season. The LUBA 4 is a Q4 2026 pre-order with no confirmed ship date to a US address. The LUBA 3 is in stock and we install it the same week.
You need to know the price. Mammotion has published no LUBA 4 pricing. The LUBA 3 is $1,799 / $2,239 / $3,299 depending on size, and you can budget against that today.
Your signal is weak. Both machines use NetRTK over cellular, but this is worth sitting with. If your property has marginal coverage, a local RTK base station is the more predictable setup, and that is a conversation to have before you buy either one — not after. Map your lawn and we will check the actual signal at your address for free.
There is a fourth, quieter reason: nobody knows the LUBA 4’s runtime. Battery capacity, minutes per charge and charge time are all unpublished. For a 0.75-acre lawn that probably does not matter. For a 1.5-acre lawn on the 6000F, runtime is the difference between finishing overnight and still mowing at noon, and right now that number does not exist.
What we would tell you on the phone
If uncut edges, turn scuffs and corner wear are what bother you about robot mowing — wait. That is precisely what the LUBA 4 was built to fix, and no firmware update brings those features to a LUBA 3.
If you want a mower working next spring on a known budget, buy the LUBA 3 now. It shares the slope rating, shares the positioning approach, and it is a machine we can stand behind because we have already put dozens of them in the ground.
Either way, the useful first step is the same and it costs nothing: map your lawn, and we will tell you the measured grass area, the sky view and the signal — then tell you which machine actually fits.

Frequently asked
Is the LUBA 4 AWD better than the LUBA 3 AWD?
On hardware, yes — a wider deck, four cameras instead of two, independent front-wheel steering, bidirectional driving, a single wide cutting-height range instead of the S/H deck choice, and an optional edge trimmer. But the LUBA 3 ships today at a known price with a known runtime, and the LUBA 4 is a Q4 2026 pre-order with no published price, runtime or battery capacity. Better hardware is not the same as the better purchase.
Should I wait for the LUBA 4 or buy a LUBA 3 now?
Buy the LUBA 3 now if you need grass cut this coming season, if your budget is fixed and you need to know the number, or if your property has weak cellular signal and you would rather run a local RTK base station. Wait for the LUBA 4 if your main frustrations are uncut edges, turn scuffs and corner wear, or if you are torn between the S and H decks and want one machine that does both.
Does the LUBA 4 have a bigger cutting deck than the LUBA 3?
Yes. Every LUBA 3 AWD model runs a 15.7-inch twin-disc deck. The LUBA 4 3000F and 6000F step up to 17.3 inches, and the triple-disc 12000F runs 20.9 inches — about a third wider than any LUBA 3.
Do I still have to choose between the S and H deck on the LUBA 4?
No, and this is one of the most practical improvements. The LUBA 3 forces a permanent choice at purchase between the S deck at 1 to 2.7 inches and the H deck at 2.2 to 4 inches. The LUBA 4 3000F and 6000F cover 1 to 3.9 inches in one machine. The 12000F tops out at 3.3 inches.
Can the LUBA 3 use the LUBA 4 edge-trimming module?
No. The edge-trimming module is a LUBA 4 accessory, and even within the LUBA 4 line it is not compatible with the 12000F. It is also an additional purchase with no announced price.
