Original data from the free Zippy Lawn Mapping tool — homeowners trace their real lawn on satellite imagery and we analyze size, zones, sky view, slope and mower fit. Aggregated August 29, 2026: 294 lawns, about 310 acres, across 25+ states. No survey answers — measured maps.

How big is the average lawn considering a robot mower?

The median lawn is 18,900 sq ft — about 0.43 acres. The mean is roughly 1.05 acres, pulled up by a minority of large rural properties. The full spread (n=294):

Do most yards need a multi-zone mower?

Yes — 58% of mapped properties have two or more separate mowing areas, and 46% have three or more (front, back, side yards as their own zones). 32% needed connecting channels or pass-through gates drawn between areas. The single-rectangle suburban lawn is the minority case — multi-zone handling and transfer paths matter more than spec sheets suggest.

Is there enough open sky for RTK?

Median open sky over a mapped lawn: 85% (n=160). Our RTK-readiness rating comes out:

How steep are real lawns?

The median lawn averages just 3.7% slope — but the median steepest spot is 12.3% (n=163). 17% of lawns have at least one section steeper than 20%, where many robot mowers hit their rated limit, and 7% exceed 30% — AWD territory. Averages hide the one bank that disqualifies a mower.

How long does a robot mower actually take?

Median projected full mow: about 3.5 hours of blade time for the recommended mower on each lawn (n=208); a quarter of lawns need 7.5+ hours. Since the robot runs unattended on a schedule, long mow times matter far less than buyers expect — coverage per day is the real spec.

Methodology — and what this data is not

Every number comes from real properties mapped with our free satellite tool: homeowners (and our own team, on customers' behalf) trace the actual mowable areas; sky view and slope are modeled from public satellite and elevation data; mow times are projections for the recommended mower. It's a self-selected sample of households actively considering robotic mowing — not a random survey of all U.S. lawns — and the maps are preliminary planning instruments, not site surveys. Ns vary by metric because not every profile completes every analysis. We update this page as the dataset grows.
